Miami is the new No. 2, Oklahoma enters the top 10 in AP poll

What 7 FBS teams need to do to bounce back from disappointing starts

After a couple of weeks of stagnation in the top 3, the Week 5 AP Top 25 shows a mix of stability and significant movement across college football. Ohio State remains No. 1, collecting 55 first-place votes with a perfect 3-0 start after a bye in Week 4. Miami (Fla.) jumped up two spots to No. 2 after a 26-7 victory over Florida. It's the Hurricanes' highest mark since 2017. Penn State, off a bye, and LSU each slip one spot to make room for Miami despite remaining undefeated. Georgia stayed at No. 5, Oregon held at No. 6 and Oklahoma made a notable climb, moving up four spots into the top 10 for the first time since 2023.

Movers of the week

  • Biggest jump: Indiana rose eight spots to No. 11, dropping 63 points on then-No. 9 Illinois, as the Hoosiers are gaining momentum. Texas Tech climbed five spots to No. 12 after going to Salt Lake and defeating Utah 34-10. Missouri outlasted South Carolina to move up three spots, while USC in its second week in the poll is now standing at No. 21 with a 4-0 record.
  • Biggest drops: Texas remains in the top 10, but fell two spots to No. 10 following a 55-0 win over Sam Houston. Illinois' 53-point loss was the largest ever by a AP top-10 team against a non-top-10 opponent and warranted the 14-place fall to No. 23. Utah and Auburn both fell out of the poll this week after ranked Week 4 loses.
  • New entrants: There are two newcomers with TCU making its AP poll debut at No. 24 following a 35-24 win over SMU. It's the Horned Frogs' first appearance since preseason of 2023. BYU also enters the Top 25 for the first time this year, with a 3-0 start to the season.
